The alexithymia is a disorder largely unknown neurological, however, it is widespread among the population, affecting one out of every seven people. The term comes from the Greek and means “without words for the emotions”.It can be defined as a disorder in emotional processing characterized by the inability of the subject to express emotions as a consequence that these people are unable to identify their own emotions.

It was the American psychiatrist Peter Sifneos the first to identify this disorder in 1972. So his study is quite recent. Recent studies have found anomalies in a brain zone that is responsible for linking emotions with the area takes cognizance of these emotions and processes them. People with alexithymia, instead of demonstrating a cerebral activity adapted to the emotional intensity of the situation as normal, show a very weak or, on the contrary, very intense activity, which would cause that the emotional experience, is not properly appreciated.

Alexithymics do have emotions, but they do not know the physiological expressions that derive from them or do not understand their emotional meaning. Like other people, they respond to emotional stimuli (agitated breathing, palpitations, etc …), but interpret them as physical symptoms of illness, since they are not able to associate them with emotional symptoms. Some of the physical symptoms characteristic of this disorder are dizziness, headaches and the presence of insomnia.

Do not confuse alexithymics with shy and reserved people who have difficulty expressing their emotions. There are also people who do not express their feelings in a habitual way, either by the education received, by their culture or because they have seen in their families. There are two types of alexithymia: primary, when the origin has to do with a neurological abnormality or a genetic predisposition, and the secondary one, which is caused by traumatic experiences usually in childhood or by a prolonged stress situation. In these cases, painful emotions are eliminated as an instrument of defense and denial of trauma.

Alexithymics have a number of common characteristics:

– Difficulty in identifying and expressing emotions and feelings.

– Do not suffer for it, since they are not aware that they have a problem.

– They are usually introverted, lonely people and are indifferent to everything around them.

– Not transmitting their feelings brings with it a great number of problems and conflicts in their social relations.

– They are people who did not engage in conversation with the rest.

– They are also very serious people, monotonous and very expressionless.

– They lack creative ability and imagination.

– They do not make personal decisions regarding their feelings, so they are governed by practical reasons to decide
